CHABAD LAUNCHES UNIQUE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, OFFERING ONGOING SUPPORT AND FRIENDSHIP TO SENIOR CITIZENS
Phoenix, Arizona – Chabad of Arizonahas launched an ongoing volunteer program to serve senior citizens in the Metro-Phoenix area on a daily basis, including those residing in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals or even at home. The goal of Chabad’s “Smile on Seniors” or “S.O.S” program is to ultimately match a volunteer with every Jewish senior in our area.
Even those with family and friends close by will benefit from an extra visit each week, according to SOS program director, Chani Levertov. “Today our parents are living longer, more productive lives. If we’re in the neighborhood, we visit as often as we can. Still, it would be wonderful to know that someone else can care in a most loving way… someone who would be a friend, bring some warmth and a smile on a regular basis,” said Mrs. Levertov.
SOS volunteers, comprised of all ages, are assigned “Buddies.” These special moments enrich both the volunteer and the senior. Volunteers gain from the wisdom and invaluable experience of a life time. The reward that comes with people sharing deep and meaningful feelings or simply holding a hand or lending an ear in a lonely moment. These are the special moments in life that enrich both the volunteer and the senior.
The Smile on Seniors program also will be doing individual holiday events in Assisted Living Centers and offering a wide variety of programs catered to Seniors including Study Classes. This Chanuka programs will be taking place at The Grand Court and the Chris Ridge Assisted Living Communities.
The SOS will be coordinated and run by Rabbi Levi and his wife Chani Levertov.
